Farming Simulator 22 will feature three new crops: grapes, olives, and sorghum. If you watched this year’s FarmCon, you learned more about them in our presentation. If you missed it, you can watch it right now. QA Lead Ken Burgess gives you an introduction.

Why grapes, olives, and sorghum?

There are several reasons why we decided to go with grapes, olives, and sorghum for Farming Simulator 22 Mode. The most obvious one: they bring new and exciting machine types into the game and diversify the gameplay experience when it comes to agriculture.

Grapes and olives are also a great addition because they tie into various other gameplay mechanics. Our new production chains, for example. And, for our brand-new map set in a Mediterranean climate, they’re more than fitting. On top of that, since you place the vines manually, they are also part of our new and improved build mode.

You see, grapes and olives are not just two new crop types added to the list, but come with new gameplay mechanics that affect various parts of the game. And Sorghum? It’s very popular in the United States, perfect for our Midwest-inspired map Elmcreek. Since it’s a highly nutritious crop, it steadily gains more importance around the world in warmer regions – making it a fitting addition to the list of grains in Farming Simulator.

What’s special about the machines for grapes and olives?

Grapes and olives are special if you look at the machinery used: The vines have collisions, so you need to maneuver the machines carefully along the vines. Otherwise, you risk damaging your new crops. Be careful!

Because of that, the machines are very small and specialized compared to the usual field work. The new machinery have a working width about 1-1.5 meters. You won’t be able to drive between the vines with a big tractor.

This also means, you will spend some time working carefully between the vines. Don’t worry, it will be worth it. Not just because it’s a rewarding task to make your tummy feel good after work is done. Your virtual bank account will make you happy, too.

How does the process of planting and harvesting work?

First, you plant the vines. With our new build mode (stay tuned for more info on that!), you place rows of vines on your fields. Basically, you create a nicely striped vineyard. You then have to mulch the growing grass between the vines and cultivate to help the plants grow up to their full potential.

With special fertilizer machines, you spray the plants to improve the yield. As you do with other crops. After harvesting with special harvesters, you need to cut back the leaves, so the grapes can grow anew. This is required for grapes only, and is not needed for olives.

Remember, if you have seasonal growth activated, you need to mind the crop calendar. Grapes and olives have to be planted between March and the end of June. As for the harvest, grapes will be ready in September until the end of October. Olives need to be harvested in October. Sorghum, on the other hand, needs to be sown from April to May and harvested between August and the end of September.

What can you do with the harvested crops?

As you know by now, you don’t have to stop with harvesting and selling crops. Grapes, olives, and sorghum can be processed at a production plant. And, you have several options, too.

Grapes can be processed into grape juice, or even raisins. You can then deliver them to other production plants like the cereal factory or to a selling point like the supermarket. Olives can be taken to the oil mill to be processed into olive oil. Sorghum, as a type of grain, can be processed into flour at the grain mill.

Farming Simulator 22 introduces three new crops: Grapes, olives and sorghum. Thanks to the new production chains, you can even process them further. Let’s take a first look at the new crops and what you can do with them. But wait, have you seen our brand-new trailer, yet?

Farming Simulator 22 releases on November 22nd for PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Stadia. Pre-order now to receive the CLAAS XERION SADDLE TRAC Pack! For PC, there will be a Collector’s Edition available.

Start your juicy business – with grapes!

You will be having fun planting countless grape vines on the hillsides and curved fields. Just like you do on a real vineyard with rows and rows of vines, you stripe your farmland with them and make it look really idyllic – as if your farm was a vacation spot. To fully enjoy the scenic view on your own vineyard, you will need to take care of your grapes, of course. With special equipment, the fruit needs to be fertilized and the ground loosened and mulched.

If you’re playing Farming Simulator 22 with seasonal growth activated, you’ll have to take a look at the crop calendar, too: Plant your grapes between March and June and don’t waste time harvesting them in September and October with the New Holland Braud 9070L. Also, don’t forget to prepare what’s left for the next season the following year!

Olives for more Mediterranean charm

If a farm full of grape vines isn’t Mediterranean enough for your delicate taste, take it a step further and plant olive trees on your fields. Looking like a dense carpet of little trees from afar, it’s definitely just as beautiful of a sight, too. In case of doubt, just go with both!

There are some differences when it comes to taking care of olives. For example, the planting season for olives is the same as for grapes, between March and June. But, you will have to harvest them a little bit quicker – harvest season for olives is only in September. Again, New Holland will give you the right machine to harvest – this time, it’s the New Holland Braud 9090X.

New type of grain: Nutritious sorghum

We also added a new type of grain with sorghum. A member of the sweet grass family, sorghum is one of the most important foodstuffs in the world. It’s highly nutritious because of its dietary fibers and is used in a lot of different forms for human consumption. It’s mostly cultivated in dry climate areas and is therefore steadily becoming more and more important in the world.

Production chains with grapes, olives and sorghum

Since we introduce production chains with Farming Simulator 22, you can process the new crops after harvesting. Only if you want to, though!

What do you make out of grapes? Fine and tasty grape-juice, of course (what else would you do with this delicious fruit that’s enjoyable for all ages?). But dried grapes are tasty, too – don’t you think? With olives, you can produce high-grade olive oil. That shouldn’t be a big surprise. Sorghum you can deliver to the grain mill to produce fine flour.

There’s more to tell when it comes to the three new crops and the production chains. We’ll go more in-depth, soon, and show you how to handle them in the game. If you missed our announcement of production chains – check it out, now!

And as usual, stay tuned – especially for FarmCon! We’re streaming live from July 21st to July 23rd and show a lot of new material. It’s broadcasted on our official GIANTS Software Twitch channel.

Farming Simulator 22 releases for PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Stadia on November 22nd. Depending on the region, the cover depicts a Case IH AFS Connect Magnum, Fendt 900 Vario, Massey Ferguson MF 8S or Zetor Crystal.

Get your production chains started in Farming Simulator 22! And don’t stop with selling the wheat after harvesting. Instead, deliver it to the grain mill, so it gets processed into fine flour and bring it to the local bakery. Then, you decide what they’ll do with it!

New building types, shops and businesses

So, what’s new exactly? There are a lot of new building types in Farming Simulator 22. While some are already placed on the new maps and ready to take your goods for further processing, you can also build them yourself – making them your business to expand your farming operation. Since the feature is still a work-in-progress, we won’t show you everything today.

One of the businesses being part of a production chain is the bakery. If you want to generate income from delicious cakes or fluffy bread, you need to supply them with flour, sugar and butter as well as other ingredients. To get those, you have to visit other links of the chain like the grain mill, dairy, or the sugar mill.

Your new bread and butter

How you get one resource from one point to another, is your choice: either haul it yourself if your farming business is able to handle loads of goods or let the businesses do the heavy lifting – for a fee, of course. The grain mill or sugar mill, for example, let you decide if you transport the processed goods to the next link in the chain yourself or if the mills deliver them.

Also, in case of the bakery, you can also decide if they sell the produced goods directly or if you distribute them to the local supermarket, restaurant or farmer’s market to generate even more income. One way or another, if you’re selling baskets full of freshly baked bread instead of just the harvested wheat, you’ll make more money.

Especially, since you not only have various options on what to produce, you can start multiple productions at once. Just make sure, you provide the necessary resources to keep the production going.

More info to follow – stay tuned!
